Jonesville — Ferriday High School players might be playing at different positions Friday, but they’ll all be Trojans when the team takes on the Block Bears.

After playing their season openers last week, the Trojans and the Bears are switching some players around because of either injury or placement purposes.

Ferriday had two starters visit the hospital last week after their home game against Natchez High School. Starting running back Dontrell Domino had an apparent false alarm with a knee injury.

Domino tore his ACL last year in the beginning of the season.

Starting quarterback Ronald Williams also took a trip to the emergency room, butgot worse news from the doctor.

“Williams has two fractures to his collarbone, and we’re waiting to see how long he’s out for,” Ferriday head coach Cleothis Cummings said.

Williams’ shoulder injury is bad news for Trojan fans, but the good news is Ferriday is equipped with an experienced backup quarterback.

“Shannon Morales is going to step into the position for us,” Cummings said. “He knows the plays, and we’re going to continue to work with him.”

Working with Morales is just one of several things Cummings said this week’s practices will focus on.

In Ferriday’s season opener, Trojan fans saw several players drop like flies to major cramping issues, and Cummings is looking to work out those stiff muscles.

“We’re going to work on conditioning more,” he said. “When it comes down to the first game, you’re going to have kids cramping, but we have to get acclimated to playing for four quarters.”

When it comes to Block High School, Cummings said defense would be the key against head coach Benny Vault Jr.’s double-wing offense.

“We’re trying to keep their offense off of the field because they can hold the ball an entire quarter if they have to,” Cummings said. “We have to get them three and out and let our offense control the game.”

Vault, on the other hand, said he feels much better about the direction his Bears are heading despite losing to Ouachita Christian 40-14.

“My offense and defense played much better and more organized,” Vault said.

Though Vault said he could see the light of day after a subpar jamboree performance, he still plans to make some key changes to his offense.

“I moved Trevor Vault back to the quarterback position and moved Vyn’Quez O’Steen to running back,” Vault said. “(O’Steen) does a good job running the ball.”

Vault said Ferriday is a big rival for them, and he looks forward to his team fighting for a tough win, even though he won’t be there to see it.

“My son is graduating from (the U.S. Army) Ranger School that day, and that’s not something that happens every day,” Vault said. “But I have some very capable coaches taking charge, and I know they will execute the game plan.”

The Block Bears will host the Ferriday Trojans at 7 p.m. Friday.
