NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School was its own worst enemy Friday night against Centreville Academy.

That was Rebels head coach David King’s assessment following a 34-12 loss to the Tigers. Despite outgaining Centreville on offense, 346 yards to 330, untimely mistakes spelled the Rebels’ doom, King said.

“We had breakdowns in every facet of the game — giving up big plays, key fumbles, key missed tackles,” King said. “It was just an assortment of little things that added up to big plays for them. They just whipped us.”

ACCS was unable to score until 2:27 left in the fourth quarter when Parker Rymer caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Carlos Woods. The extra point attempt failed, and ACCS trailed 27-6.

Centreville responded by scoring with 1:50 left on a 5-yard carry by Ian Ball. Brock Andrus kicked the extra point, giving Centreville a 34-6 lead.

The Rebels scored their final touchdown with 37 seconds left on a Lester Wells 15-yard catch from Tyler Stockstill. The two-point pass attempt failed, making the final score 34-12.

King said his team didn’t have the mental edge it needed against a traditional powerhouse in Centreville.

“I told them right before we went out not to be scared of making big plays,” King said. “I’m at a loss as to why I didn’t get them ready to play. I thought we were ready, but that has to be on me that we’re having mental breakdowns. The kids are playing hard, they just aren’t playing smart, and that goes on us as coaches.”

Centreville scored first with 8:42 left in the first quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Andrus. The Tigers got a touchdown with 9:31 left in the second on a 29-yard reception by Mark Curry from quarterback Casey Haygood.

The Tigers added two more touchdowns to take a 24-0 lead at the half. John McDowell scored on an 80-yard punt return with 5:02 left in the second, and Haygood hit Tyler Caston on a 35-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining.

In the third quarter, Andrus had another field goal, this time from 21 yards out, to give Centreville a 27-0 lead with 7:22 left in the quarter.

Haygood finished 10-for-20 in passing with 240 yards and two touchdowns. Colby Shaw hauled in five passes for 86 yards, and Tyler Caston also tallied 86 yards on three receptions. Ball led Centreville in rushing with 108 yards on four carries.

For ACCS, Stockstill was 6-for-13 in passing with 111 yards and a touchdown, and Woods went 4-for-6 for 69 yards and a touchdown. Trey Fleming had four receptions for 74 yards, and Wells had 75 yards and a touchdown on two catches.

Defensively, Shaw had 10 tackles for the Tigers, and Ball added nine. For ACCS, Brandon Ross and Matthew Rymer both had 12 tackles, and Matthew Rymer also tallied a sack.

Centreville (2-1) will play at Parklane Academy next Friday, while ACCS (2-1) will play at Central Private School.
