MEADVILLE — Chris Robinson had a rough game throwing the ball against McComb’s defense, but he more than made up for that in the running game with 145 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries as the Franklin County Bulldogs upset the Tigers, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, 33-28 Friday night for their first win of the season.

Turnovers was the difference in the outcome, even though Franklin County nearly blew a 33-7 lead in the fourth quarter. McComb quarterback Alex Woodall threw two interceptions and Franklin County recovered four Tigers fumbles. Robinson threw one interception and the Bulldogs lost two fumbles despite putting the ball on the ground seven times.

Franklin County had a 14-0 halftime lead thanks to touchdown runs of 3 and 19 yards by Robinson. Benard Selmon, Darrin Wiley, and Robinson each had touchdown runs as the Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 19-7 for a 33-7 lead.

However, McComb would not go away easy. Woodall threw three of his four touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, two of them in a 15-second stretch, to make it a 33-28 ball game. An exchange of fumbles between the two teams, first by Franklin County and then a costly one by McComb, didn’t do the Tigers any favors.

Selmon led the Bulldogs in rushing with 148 yards on 29 carries and Wiley had four carries for 70 yards. Robinson was just 2-for-9 passing for 39 yards.

Woodall ended up completing 20 of 34 passes for 318 yards. Trivillian Williams had eight receptions for 142 yards while Walker Larkin had four catches for 116 yards.

Franklin County (1-2) will be on the road at 7 p.m. next Friday when it takes on Tylertown.

Wilkinson County 38, Amite County 0

LIBERTY — Devin Voorhies threw for 113 yards and one touchdown and ran for 131 yards on 13 carries and scored two more touchdowns as the Wilkinson County Wildcats used two big quarters to defeat the Amite County Trojans Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Wildcats scored 16 points in the second quarter and put the game away with a 22-point third quarter.

Voorhies ended up completing 9 of 18 passes on the night with no interceptions. La’Darian Peterson had five carries for 41 yards with one touchdown. Allenzae Staggers caught five passes for 71 yards to go with 34 yards rushing on four carries. Lakendrick Washington led the defense in tackles with seven while Anfernee Earls had two sacks to go with his five tackles.

Wilkinson County (2-1) has a 7 p.m. home game next Friday against Forest Hill.

Jefferson County 12,

Port Gibson 8

FAYETTE — Rashard Brown made up for a bad passing night with a 1-yard touchdown run late in the first half, which proved to be the game-winning score for Jefferson County Tigers as they stunned the Port Gibson Blue Waves Friday night for their first win of the season.

Jefferson County’s running game was pivotal in not only scoring both of the team’s touchdowns, but also keeping Port Gibson’s offense on the sidelines. Arthur Norton led the way with 103 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Brown was just 1-for-12 passing for 35 yards.

The Tigers’ defense also came up big as they forced five Blue Waves turnovers. James Claiborne had two interceptions while Calvin Barnes, Ronald Barnes, and Kenneth Ware each had a fumble recovery.

Port Gibson’s only score came in the third quarter on a 10-yard run by Christopher Seagrest, who also ran in for the 2-point conversion.

Jefferson County (1-2) has an open date before playing at McLaurin at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.
