NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School head coach David King was not pleased with the way his Rebels played Friday night against River Oaks Academy in their 20-18 victory.
The Rebels only earned nine first downs with 164 total yards, but somehow, they came out with the win.
“Three players fell down coming down the ‘run out’ sign, and it all went downhill from there,” King joked.
The Rebels failed to score until the third quarter after trailing 6-0.
ACCS finally saw an offensive spark when Torrey Smith ran for a 37-yard touchdown to take a 7-6 lead at the 9:55 mark of the third quarter.
Just two minutes later, Trey Fleming burst through several River Oaks jerseys with a 52-yard punt return.
River Oaks scored once more in the third to bring the score to 14-12.
Both teams added one touchdown in the fourth, and it was good enough for the Rebels to sneak out of Monroe, La., with the win.
Lester Wells scored the Rebels’ final touchdown on a 10-yard run.
King said the number of errors his team made was disappointing, but still managing to win showed him a lot about the Rebels.
“We made every mistake I’ve ever seen in a football game,” King said. “We didn’t get lined up throughout the whole second half. That’s all on me, but we still found a way to win on the road against a playoff team.”
Since its still early in the season, King said there is a lot of work to be done before heading into next week’s game against Centreville.
“It’s better to make a mistake and win, than to make them and lose,” he said. “We’ll draw some positives from it and get ready for a mad Centreville team.”
