Joe Guinns

VIDALIA – Services for Joe “Buck” Guinns, 97, of Vidalia, who died Thursday, Jan 17, 2008, at Camelot Leisure Living Nursing Home, in Ferriday, will be at 10 a.m. today at Triumph Baptist Church.
Burial will follow at New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, in Peck, La., under the direction of Richardson and Sims Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Mr. Guinns was born Feb. 13, 1910, in Wilkinson County, the son of John and Amanda Guinns. He confessed Christ and was baptized in 1926 by the Rev. George Ray. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church for many years. He later joined the Triumph Baptist Church where he served until his death. He was a deacon. He was married to Lucille Hunter Guinns.
Mr. Guinns was a very hard worker. He spent most of his life working as a laborer at the Union Compress in Ferriday. When he reached a ripe old age, he retired from the Union Compress with a sound mind and a reasonable healthy body to enjoy the fruits of his labor.
Mr. Guinns served as chairman of the Triumph Baptist Church deacon board and chairman of the finance committee for many years. When his body began to weaken, he continued his service as a faithful member until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one brother, Willie Guinns; three sisters, Ethel Washington, Theresa Henry and Inez Kegler.
Survivors include two daughters, Georganna Berry and husband, Lawrence, both of Vidalia and Bertha Anthony Garrett and husband, George, both of Forney, Texas; one granddaughter, Trena Williams of Portsmouth, Va.; two grandsons, William Berry Jr. of Clarksville, Tenn. and Cedric Jason Moses of Dallas; one great-grandson, Roderick Berry; one great-granddaughter, Tianna Berry; a special niece he raised, Georgia Allen of Vidalia; one niece, Bertha Jordan of Winnsboro; five nephews, Willie Lee Guinns and Tom Kegler, both of Los Angeles, James Henry and wife, Priscilla, both of Peck, La., Andrew Henry and wife, Katie, both of Las Vegas and Solomon Smothers of Vidalia; two godchildren, Albert Brown and Melvin Knight Jr.; great-nieces and nephews; great-great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
