WOODVILLE — Tali Beard had a big game at the plate for Trinity Episcopal as the Lady Saints remained undefeated in MAIS District 7-A after defeating the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams 9-4 Monday afternoon.

Beard went 2-for-4 with a triple and five runs batted in. Marty Lewis also had a big game for Trinity as she went 3-for-4 with a double and Hannah Fitt had a double. The Lady Saints jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back.

Kailey Hutchins had another solid outing on the mound for Trinity. She gave up four runs, all of them earned, on eight hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts in five and one-third innings.

“Kailey came out strong,” Lady Saints head coach Miranda Doughty said. “She kept her pitches low in the zone. They didn’t hit well against her. We had a lot of big hits.”

WCCA assistant coach Jesse Toney said Trinity deserves all the credit for the win.

“The Trinity girls knocked the cover off the ball,” Jesse Toney said. “Trinity played a good, solid, fundamental game the whole time. They played solid defense and made the plays in the infield and outfield. We had opportunities, but couldn’t capitalize.”

Lewis also pitched the final two-thirds on an inning. She walked on and got both outs by way of the strikeout.

The Lady Saints took control by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning and four in the top of the second. WCCA scored one run in the bottom of the third inning, only to have Trinity respond with two runs in the top of the fourth.

Even though the Lady Rams scored three runs in the final two innings of this six-inning game, it was not nearly enough. The Lady Saints scored their final run in the top of the sixth that put them ahead 9-2.

Hannah Lanehart had a rough performance on the mound for WCCA. She allowed nine runs, six of which were earned, on eight hits to go along with three walks and five strikeouts. She was also let down at times by her defense, which committed four errors.

Carmen Cavin went 2-for-3 and Rhiannon Nettles went 2-for-4 to lead the Lady Rams at the plate.

Trinity Episcopal (8-7, 3-0) has a decisive district game at 6 p.m. today at Franklin Academy. WCCA (2-8, 1-3) plays again at 4 p.m. Thursday at Tensas Academy.
