NATCHEZ — Fifteen players were vying for six spots for this September’s Beau Pré Cup on Saturday at the 2013 Beau Pré Cup Open Qualifier held at Beau Pré Country Club.
And while the course was there for the taking, scoring was not low at all. In fact, the lowest score was even-par 72, and that was shared by two players — Hayden Kaiser and Jody Helbling.
“I played really good. Probably my low round of the year,” said Kaiser, who had two birdies and two bogeys during his round. “The course is in excellent shape. The greens are great. The fairways are great.”
Kaiser added that he was happy to qualify for the Beau Pré Cup because it is favorite tournament of the entire year.
“The Beau Pré Cup is the best tournament here,” Kaiser said.
Also qualifying for the Beau Pré Cup is Al Conn, who finished third at 3-over-par 75.
“It feels good (to qualify). It’s a relief,” Conn said. “I played pretty good. I made a double bogey on 17 that gave me a 75. Other than that, everything was good. No. 2 was really tough.”
Conn added that the heat and humidity were not that big of a deal — until right as everyone was finishing up their round.
“It was nice until the rain came. There was a good breeze out there,” Conn said.
Chad Huber finished fourth at 4-over-par 76 to qualify. Keith Rayborn and Mike Cook also qualified for the Beau Pré Cup as they ended up in a tie for fifth at 6-over-par 78.
It was a good thing all five groups of three players got their rounds in as a heavy downpour came through the Beau Pré golf course at 3:30 p.m.
The second of the two Beau Pré Cup Open Qualifiers will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7.
