JACKSON — Gov. Phil Bryant and film director Tate Taylor will announce a “major film project” Monday in Jackson.

Natchez Mayor Butch Brown said last week that a major movie could be filming in Natchez in the coming months.

“All signs are pointing to my directing the James Brown story this fall in Mississippi.” Taylor said in an interview with scriptmag.com earlier this month.

Sources close to the movie say major portions of the film will be shot in Natchez.

Born in South Carolina, James Brown was a legendary singer and is regarded as one of the founding fathers of funk. He has been dubbed “The Godfather of Soul.”

Taylor, who owns a house in Church Hill, directed the 2011 Academy Award-nominated film “The Help,” also filmed in Mississippi.

Rolling Stone magazine reported earlier this year that Spike Lee was originally tapped as a director.

It was later announced that Lee would not be directing, and Taylor had been hired has director.

Academy Award-winning producer Brian Grazer is set to co-produce the film with Rolling Stone vocalist Mick Jagger, according to Rolling Stone magazine.

Brown has indicated that the movie production may involve the Margaret Martin Performing Arts Center.

The movie announcement will be at 10 a.m. at the Mississippi Coliseum at 1207 Mississippi St.

Natchez has been the filming location of several films, including “The Lady Killers,” “The Horse Soldiers,” parts of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and “Huckleberry Finn,” and the HBO series “True Blood.”
