NATCHEZ — The 38-year-old victim of a Tuesday night shooting on Dumas Drive said she’s alive by the grace of God.

The victim, who spoke under the condition of anonymity from a hospital bed in Jackson, said Thursday she does not know the assailant who inflicted a single gunshot wound to her back at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday at 308 Dumas Drive.

Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said it is a possibility the victim knows her shooter, but the victim denies the claim.

“I do not know this guy that did this shooting,” she said. “It was dark and I never saw his face.

“All I know is I was shot in my back. Only witnesses can identify him, and even though the name was mentioned to me, I don’t recognize the name.”

The victim said she was on her way to visit family in the neighborhood when she recognized a family member’s car parked at 308 Dumas Drive. The shooting occurred as she walked toward the residence.

“I didn’t have problems with anyone down there,” she said. “I’m a victim not to be treated as a suspect.”

The victim remains in stable condition at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, and she is grateful no one else was hurt during the incident.

“He could’ve shot kids or anything out there,” she said of the suspect. “It could’ve been anyone. The bullet could have had anyone’s name on it.”

Mullins said investigators continued to interview witnesses Thursday.

“It’s an open investigation, we’re working on it and we don’t have enough evidence to make an arrest at this time,” Mullins said. “But we expect to make an arrest.”
