VIDALIA — The City of Vidalia welcomed Tuesday evening the city’s newest industrial park resident — a biomass energy production facility that will bring at least 50 new jobs and a $100-million capital investment to the area.
The Vidalia Board of Aldermen authorized leasing 132 acres in the industrial park to Hinterland LLC.
Concordia Economic Development and Industrial Development District Executive Director Heather Malone said after the aldermen meeting that the company would produce biomass for energy. The biomass will be transported from the facility, but those details have not been finalized, Malone said.
Once the details of the facility are finalized, Malone said, more information would be available for the public.
Mayor Hyram Copeland said he was very pleased about the new industry and thanked Malone and others for their work in getting Hinterland to Vidalia.
Sue Wells, managing member of Hinterland, said the efforts of Vidalia, the parish’s economic development district and the state of Louisiana made Vidalia an attractive location for the facility.
In other news from meeting:
-The board voted to advertise for bids for a waste disposal contract.
The city’s disposal contract with Waste Management expires in September.
Copeland said the city expects to open the bids at the board’s August meeting.
-The board voted to set the millage rate at 3.310, the same as it was last year.
