Vidalia — The Concordia All-Stars managed to stay hot in the heat Saturday, with their second straight win of the sub-district tournament.
Concordia defeated the Catahoula All-Stars 10-4 in the first of two games Saturday afternoon.
Concordia head coach Boo Blaney said he was proud of his team’s focus despite the scalding temperature.
“Even though it was hot out there, they stayed focused,” Blaney said. “I told them the better their defense, the quicker they can get out of the heat.”
With Catahoula at the plate first, they went right at Concordia, scoring with their second batter Preston Creel.
Creel singled to bring in John Ingram for the early score, 1-0.
But Concordia returned the aggressiveness in the bottom of the first with three straight runs powered by Jake Spears’ triple with the bases loaded to bring in Chase McGraw, Aiden Martin and Tyrin Jordan.
Concordia would score once more before heading into the second inning.
Now up 4-1, Concordia turned up their defense and never let Catahoula see first base in the second inning.
Concordia went back to the dugout only to score five runs in the bottom of the second.
Blaney said RBIs were most important for his team Saturday as they recorded nine RBIs on the game.
“If you keep your eye on the ball and keep the ball in play, good things happen,” he said. “RBIs win games.”
Gabe Rushing sacrificed a single to bring in Luke Williamson for their fifth run of the game.
After another score, McGraw hit an in-field home run that also brought in Brayden Shannon.
Concordia saw one more runner touch home plate before heading into the third up 9-1.
Catahoula got a spark of energy as they outscored Concordia three to one in the third.
But it wasn’t enough for the opposing team as that would be the last inning either team scored.
Catahoula’s three-run inning was single-handedly done by Conner Aplin’s in-field home run. His swing also allowed Creel and Brennan Keen to score.
With Catahoula down 9-4, Michael Williams brought Concordia back to a comfortable lead as he scored off of Parker Blaney’s hit.
The two teams went into the fourth with a score of 10-4 and both played great defense allowing no runs.
Catahoula’s last chance for victory came in the top of the fifth, but they weren’t able to convert as Concordia kept their defense tight to secure the victory.
Blaney said his team gave an outstanding defensive effort.
“Our defense was really great today,” Blaney said. “A lot of balls were hit right to the pitcher (McGraw), and he made great plays.”
