FAYETTE — The Jefferson County Community Work Center, one of four centers slated to close in a month, will remain open.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections announced earlier this week that the center, as well as the centers in Bolivar, Yazoo and George counties, would remain open.
Cost savings and a shortage of minimum custody inmates eligible to work in the community work centers were the primary reasons for closing the four out of 17 community work centers.
MDOC Communications Director Grace Fisher said the 14 employees at the Jefferson County center, who would have been transferred to other facilities, would now be able to remain in Jefferson County. A total of 56 employees would have been affected by the closures, Fisher said.
