MEADVILLE — Cathedral High School rolled to a 10-3 win over Franklin County High School in five innings as Pate Shirley, Hayden Nunnery and Brock Farmer combined to throw a no-hitter in their exhibition game at the Franklin County summer baseball tournament.

“I thought our pitchers did well, not only today, but throughout the summer,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “These are all young kids, and I’m pleased with how well they played.”

The Green Wave scored in each of the first four innings — two in the top of the first and second innings, four in the top of the third and two in the top of the fourth — and finished with 11 total hits. Craig Bradley went 2-for-2, Shirley and Zack Flattman each were 2-for-3, and Nunnery had a double.

“We swung the bat better than we had the two previous weekends. It’s good when we spread our runs out like that,” Beesley said.

Shirley was the winning pitcher for the Green Wave, as he went three innings with four strikeouts and just one walk. Nunnery walked one in his one inning of relief, while Farmer walked three in one inning. No individual statistics were available for the Bulldogs.

Franklin County scored two runs in the bottom of the second inning and one in the bottom of the fifth. Neither team played well defensively, as the Bulldogs committed four errors while the Green Wave had three errors.

Cathedral’s offense wasn’t quite as effective against ACCS, but the Green Wave did enough to take a 3-0 win over the Rebels in innings in its second and final game of the day.

“We were able to get a lead in the bottom of the first inning and were able to hold on to the lead,” Beesley said. The Green Wave scored two runs in the home half of the first and one run in the bottom of the third.

Sam Parker picked up the win for the Green Wave as he allowed one hit, struck out five and walked two in three innings. Gabe Smith came on in relief and gave up one hit, struck out three and walked one.

“These kids have worked hard this summer. I’m looking forward to next season,” Beesley said.

Luke Thomas was charged with the loss for the Rebels. It was one of the very few times that ACCS pitching held an opponent to fewer than nine runs in any of its summer tournament games. Austin Tate had one of the team’s two hits with a double.

The finale went to Franklin County as the Bulldogs held on for a 5-3 win over ACCS.
