NATCHEZ — After receiving a number of complaints about the condition of the building, the City of Natchez will soon be make approximately $10,000 to $13,000 in repairs to the Natchez Community Center.

Mayor Butch Brown said the repairs will include taking out five doors at the center and enclosing those entrances, replacing a rotten wooden door and installing a new air-conditioning unit.

The city, Brown said, has already repaired some leaks in the building about which people who rented the center previously complained. Upon inspecting those leaks, Brown said, the poor condition of the doors was discovered.

The City has so far made the repairs in-house, Brown said, but will need to contract help for further help.

“We’re down to the point right now that we can’t change out this air conditioner that need to be fixed, and we’re going to have to get some help and materials for closing out those doors, while still keeping them attractive and functional,” he said.

The city, Brown said, is working with the Historic Natchez Foundation to ensure any repairs are historically accurate.

The air-conditioning unit will cost approximately $6,000 to $8,000 and has already been ordered, he said. Brown said he will ask the board of aldermen to ratify that purchase at the board’s next meeting. Brown informed the board of the repair plans at last week’s meeting.

The remainder of the repairs should cost approximately $4,000 to $5,000.

The goal, Brown said, is to get the center in better condition and make it more energy-efficient by closing off the doors.

The project is not a massive undertaking, Brown said, and should not take long. The repair work will be scheduled around events, and no events will be canceled or rescheduled because of the repairs, Brown said.
