PUEBLO, Colo. – Memorial services for Walter Eastland Flowers, 73, of Colorado City, Colo., who died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, in Fort Collins, Colo., from complications of a stroke, will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Imperial Funeral Home, in Pueblo, Colo.
It was Walter’s wish to be cremated and he will be buried in Colorado City under the direction of Imperial Funeral Home in Pueblo, Colo.
Walter was born Aug. 7, 1935, the son of Otto and Mamie Flowers. He grew up in Natchez and later attended Mississippi State University, where he excelled at both football and track. Upon graduation, he received a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps where he served 14 years, that included two tours in Vietnam. After leaving the Marine Corps, Walt and his family settled in Colorado City, Colo., where he taught for 21 years in the Pueblo County School District #70 and coached football for 12 seasons at Rye High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Hugh Flowers; one sister, Carole Mason; one son, Joseph Gerald Flowers; and wives, Mary Patricia “Pat” Flowers and Susan Strawn Flowers.
Survivors include seven children, Kevin Frith and wife, Kay, both of Deep Gap, N.C., Kerry Caruselle and husband, Joseph, and Sally Stinchcomb and husband, Lance, all of Pueblo, Andrew Frith and wife, Emily, both of Greenville, N.C., Sue Moore and husband, Bruce, both of Colorado City, Shawna Marshall and husband, Dan, both of Fort Collins, Colo., and Kristi Taullie and husband, Brian, both of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Walter will be sadly missed by his family and life-long friends, Louie Brown and Jack Byrd.
