NATCHEZ – Services for Mildred Ann James “Millie” Ewing, of Natchez, who died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, will be at noon today at Trinity Episcopal Church with the Rev. Zabron A. Davis III officiating.
Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until service time today at the church.
Mrs. Ewing was born Sept. 26, 1943, the daughter of Tom and Mildred James.
She grew up in Natchez and graduated from Natchez High in 1961 where she was a “Rebellette.” She attended The University of Mississippi and while there, placed in the Maid of Cotton Pageant and was crowned “Miss Wool.” She was also a member of Phi Mu Soroity and was awarded Sweetheart of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Millie graduated from Ole Miss in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in education, and then went on to teach fourth grade for several years. Millie was extremely proud to be a member of both The Pilgrimage Garden Club and the The Garden Club of America. Fondly known as “Millie Magnolia,” she was well known for her wonderful talents as a tour guide for The Pilgrimage Garden Club. Millie truly enjoyed volunteering her time every year to raise money and co-host with her husband, Robert, the annual Children’s Easter Egg Hunt, which benefits children in need in the Natchez and surrounding areas. She was a wonderful friend, devoted mother and grandmother, and loving wife. Millie’s classy, sassy southern style will be sorely missed by those who loved her.
Mrs. Ewing was preceded in death by her mother.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Ewing; one daughter, Stephanie Springer Transue and husband, Don, and her grandchildren, Donald Walter “Trey” Transue III and Ann Paige “Paige” Transue, all of Austin, Texas whom she adored; one stepdaughter, Robin Jsephene D’antoni and husband, Paul, both of Key West, Fla.; her father, Edward Thomas James of Natchez; her brother, Edward Thomas James Jr. and wife, Marsha, both of Jackson; one nephew, Jason Gregory James of Denver; and one niece, June Kristin James of Memphis, Tenn.
