Cathedral’s playoff game moved to today

NATCHEZ — Another round of wet weather spelled yet another delay in Cathedral High School’s baseball playoff series with Nanih Waiya High School Friday.
After dropping Game 1 to the Warriors 4-2 Thursday, the Green Wave were scheduled to play Game 2 at home at 5 p.m. Friday. But heavy rain forced the game to be moved to 2 p.m. today.
It was the second time this week the Green Wave’s series with Nanih Waiya was delayed because of weather. Game 1 was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was pushed back to Thursday because of rain in the Warriors’ hometown of Louisville.
“The mental side is the hardest part,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said about adjusting to the scheduling changes. “They get geared up and have to put it off for another day. It was tough on Game 1, sitting and waiting to take off for a four-hour trip, not knowing if we’d be able to make it.”
The Green Wave players were able to get some batting practice in early Friday afternoon in preparation for Game 2. Thomas Garrity, who got the start in Game 1 and went the distance for Cathedral, said he was able to learn a few things about his opponent from Thursday’s game.
“They’re a scrappy team,” Garrity said. “They swing the bat and hit the ball, but if we do the same thing, we’ll be perfectly fine.
“They’re a good team, but we know we can beat them if we have the intensity we need to score runs in the first and second inning. That will give us the edge we need.”
Beesley agreed, saying it would be imperative to jump on the Warriors early.
“We have to be the first one to score,” Beesley said. “It’s going to come down to timely hits, because I don’t think either team is going to score a bunch of runs.”
Sam Parker will get the start in Game 2 for Cathedral, and Beesley will have to keep an eye on all of his pitcher’s innings. Under Mississippi High School Activities Association rules, no pitcher can throw more than 17 innings in a calendar week. If Cathedral wins Game 2, Game 3 would be played Monday, and if the Green Wave were to advance, the next playoff series would be later next week. That might affect the pitching situation for the next series, Beesley said.
“But we definitely have to take care of Game 2 (first),” Beesley said. “We can’t look forward to Monday. We have to come out and play good baseball.”
Beesley said he has several arms he could use in case Parker doesn’t go the distance, including Garrity again for an inning if the score is close late in the game.
“But I probably wouldn’t pitch him more than one inning,” Beesley said.
Garrity, however, said he’s good to go as many innings as needed, despite throwing 110 pitches Thursday.
“I didn’t have any of the (arm) pain I usually have,” Garrity said. “I feel pretty comfortable pitching in any situation. I don’t feel restrained.”
Beesley said in-game strategy wouldn’t be limited to the pitching side of things. If the team needs runs later in the game, Beesley said he would switch to a more offensive-oriented lineup. If the Green Wave get ahead early, he said he would go with a defensive-oriented lineup.
“I’ll start my regular lineup,” Beesley said. “After that, it’ll be whatever the situation calls for.”
If the series goes to a Game 3, it will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Nanih Waiya.
