MONTEREY — Monterey’s varsity baseball team’s stay in the postseason didn’t last as long as expected as the No. 9 seed Wolves were upset by the 24th-seeded Grand Lake Hornets 11-1 in six innings Thursday afternoon in the bi-district round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.
Madison Morales was the winning pitcher for Grand Lake, while Kade Passman was charged with the loss for Monterey.
“Grand Lake was a good team. They were vastly underrated as a 24 seed. They lost six one-run games,” Wolves head coach Eric Richard said. “We were seeded where we should have been.”
Richard added that Grand Lake was the best No. 24 seed he’s ever seen and that the Hornets should have been a top-10 seeded team.
“They were the best team we’ve played this year, and we played some good teams,” Richard said. “They will be a tough out in the playoffs.
Monterey, co-champions of District 4-B, finished with a 17-6 overall record.
