NATCHEZ – Services for Albert “Simmie” Chatman, 89, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Baptist Church, Airport Road, with the Rev. Wilsoni Johnson officiating.
Burial will follow at Pine Hill Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of George F. West Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Chatman was born Jan. 1, 1919, the son of Wilson Early and Amanda Early. He attended Mississippi Elizah Adams School System. He was employed by Natchez Starr Grocery Store and International Paper Company. He later became successfully self-employed as a home builder and repairman.
He attended Daughter of Zion Baptist Church and St. Mary Baptist Church. He was a member of the American Legion and the NAACP. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his second wife, Mamie Parker Chatman.
Survivors include his first wife and friend, Helen Chatman; two brothers, Hezekiah Early and Wilson Early Jr.; three sisters, Evangelist Inetta Givens of Natchez, Aleene Malcom and Edith Jones, both of Los Angeles; six children, Albert and Leroy Chatman, both of Natchez, Jacqueline and Sandra, both of California, and Clinton and Dorothy, both of Dallas; 11 stepchildren; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.
