MONTEREY — Paige Bryan pitched seven solid innings and Jody Duncan went 2-for-4 with a double and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Monterey Wolves defeated the Quitman Lady Wolverines 4-3 Friday afternoon in the regional round of the LHSAA Class B Playoffs.

Bryan allowed three runs, only one earned run, on eight hits and one walk and she struck out eight batters to earn the win.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Duncan stole third base and the attempted pickoff throw was an errant one and that brought in Duncan. Not only did that play keep Monterey’s season going, it also put a halt to Quitman’s rally.

The Lady Wolverines came back from an early 3-1 deficit with one run in the top of the fifth inning and one in the top of the seventh that tied the game at 3-3.

No. 6 seed Monterey (18-10) will next play in the quarterfinals of the Class B State Tournament at Frasch Park in Sulphur, La. against No. 3 seed Grand Lake next Friday at a time to be determined.

Southeast Lauderdale sweeps Franklin County from postseason

MEADVILLE — Led by the pitching of Lauren Yeager and plenty of offense, the Southeast Lauderdale Lady Tigers defeated the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs 13-1 and 16-4 in a pair of four-inning games in the play-in round of the MHSAA Class 3A South State Playoffs.

Yeager was the winning pitcher in both games. She held Franklin County to four hits in Game 1 and allowed four runs on seven hits in Game 2. Harley McKay was the losing pitcher in each game.

Southeast Lauderdale took a 5-1 lead after three innings of play before scoring eight runs in the top of the fourth to end Game 1 early. After being the visiting team in the opener, the Lady Tigers were the home team for Game 2 and right away they put up nine runs in the bottom of the first inning. Franklin County cut the lead to 9-4 in the top of the third before Southeast Lauderdale scored seven unanswered runs to put the game away.

Franklin County finished its season with a 7-17-1 record.
