MENDENHALL — Tyler Caston’s two-out, two-run single in the top of the second inning ended up being the game-winning hit as the Centreville Academy Tigers defeated Simpson Academy 2-1 Friday afternoon to sweep the Cougars in the first round of the MAIS Class AA South State Playoffs.
Colby Shaw went five-plus innings to pick up the win. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with seven strikeouts, two walks and three hit batters. Corey Gaulden pitched one inning of shutout ball and Randy Bell came in for the seventh inning and got the save.
Caston’s hit was one of just two hits Centreville had the entire ball game. But their pitching more than made up for their lack of hitting as well as four errors. Simpson Academy didn’t do any better in the field as the Cougars committed five errors.
Centreville Academy (16-5) advanced to the South State semifinals and will host Game 1 at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday against Brookhaven Academy, which received a first-round bye.
