Leona Hamacher

NATCHEZ — Services for Leona McCullin “Monk” Hamacher, 88, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at Adams County Nursing Center were 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Darian Duckworth officiating.
Burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hamacher was born March 16, 1920, in Ruston, La., the daughter of James H. and Pearl Hedgepeth McCullin. She grew up in West Monroe, La. She was married for 59 years to Wilbur Vernon “Buddy” Hamacher who died in 1998. In 1958, Mr. and Mrs. Hamacher moved to Natchez to become co-owners of Adams County Salvage Yard and Buddy’s Service Station where they worked together for 22 years until retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband.
Survivors include one daughter, Millicent Hamacher Mayo and husband, James G. “Red,” both of Natchez; two grandchildren, Monty Mayo and wife, Monica, both of Natchez, and Mona Griffin and husband, Brian, both of Mobile, Ala.; five great-grandchildren, Lawson Griffin, Hadley Griffin, Emma Griffin, all of Mobile, and Kate Mayo and Liza Mayo, both of Natchez; and a special friend, Sue Risher of Natchez.
Pallbearers will be Monty Mayo, Brian Griffin, Mark Fortenbery, Bryan Callaway, Huey Watson and Wendall Watson.
Mrs. Hamacher attended Grace United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, she requested that because of her love for animals that memorial contributions be made to the Natchez Humane Society, Grace Methodist Church of a charity of choice.
Mrs. Hamacher was a resident of Adams County Nursing Center. The family of Mrs. Hamacher would like to thank the staff at Adams County Nursing Center and Community Hospices of America for the wonderful and loving care she received during her illness.
