NATCHEZ — Poll numbers are in on the recreation referendum — unofficially.
An e-mail poll conducted last week by the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce found 93 percent of chamber members are in favor the referendum, Chamber President Debbie Hudson said Wednesday.
“After receiving input from our member agencies and in line with our mission statement to provide an independent, representative voice for business and to create a positive business environment, the Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce strongly favors the creation of a consolidated countywide recreation program to be funded by a bond or other financial device in an amount to be determined but not exceed $5,450,000,” Hudson said.
“We feel this would be a positive step in fostering a better business environment as well as improving the quality of life our residents enjoy.”
Hudson said the poll was e-mailed to chamber members Wednesday, and members were allowed two days to submit a “yes” or “no” response. The poll listed the recreation referendum as it would appear on the ballot.
Hudson said the chamber has approximately 400 members, which includes business owners and their employees. One hundred members responded to the poll.
Though the poll results were overwhelming, Hudson said the objectors to the recreation referendum made valid arguments.
“The people that did object had some really good, valid thoughts such as, ‘Who was going to pay for it,’ which is a consideration,” Hudson said.
The chamber began studying recreation a year ago, when city and county officials asked the Chamber to put together a group of community leaders and private citizens to review the issue.
Then, this year’s Leadership Natchez Class announced their group project would be to market the vote. Hudson said the e-mail poll complemented the ongoing projects.
Voters will make their decision Tuesday.
