NATCHEZ — From Easter egg hunts to an alumni basketball game, a variety of events will keep local residents and tourists out and about this weekend.
But thunderstorms and showers forecasted for Saturday and Sunday might leave indoor activities high on the list.
Easter egg hunts
The 56th annual Miss-Lou Easter egg hunt will begin at 10 a.m. at Duncan Park. Thousands of eggs, candy, bicycles, stuffed animals, prizes and much more will be up for grabs. The event is free to all children ages 1 through 7 years.
Jefferson County Hospital’s annual Easter egg hunt will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the grounds of the hospital for ages 1 through 11. Events will include special eggs, drawings for Easter baskets and prizes. The event is free to the public.
Zion Hill Baptist Church No. 1 will have its Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m.
NHS alumni game
The third-annual Natchez High School alumni weekend will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
The events will begin with a cancer awareness seminar at 10 a.m. in the Mary Jean Irving gym.
The all-star night alumni basketball game, which will include a three-point shootout and skills challenge, will be at 6 p.m.
Southern Road to Freedom
Members of the Holy Family Catholic Church Gospel Choir will bring history alive in the dim lights of the historic Holy Family Catholic Church on the corner of St. Catherine Street and Orange Avenue.
“The Southern Road to Freedom” is presented at 8 p.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during Pilgrimage.
With music and narrative, choir members, led by master Natchez musician and director Alvin Shelby, tell the story of African Americans, particularly those who left their indelible print on the history of the Natchez area and elsewhere.
Tickets are $15 per person and are available at Natchez Pilgrimage Tours, located in the Natchez Visitor Reception Center or at the door on the night of the performance.
Southern Exposure
The Natchez Little Theatre’s traditional Pilgrimage season play, “Southern Exposure,” will continue at 7:30 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday.
“Southern Exposure” makes a little fun of Natchez Spring Pilgrimage by telling the story of Penelope Mayweather, a formerly beautiful Natchez belle trying to save her home, Mayweather Hall, from financial ruin. She takes on a boarder — John Salguod — only to have to hide his identity because he was the author who wrote a best-selling book that was banned in Natchez because locals considered it libelous. The situation is further complicated when her young cousin Carol comes to spend the night.
First-time NLT director Bo Allen has reimagined this year’s performance.
Performances of “Southern Exposure” will be at 7:30 p.m. every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, beginning Saturday and running through April 9. Tickets for performances are $15.
The box office opens one hour before each performance begins.
Historic Natchez Tableaux
The Historic Natchez Tableaux will continue at 8 p.m. Friday at the City Auditorium.
Organized and orchestrated by volunteers with the Natchez Garden Club and Pilgrimage Garden Club, the tableaux is a treat for visitors and locals who enjoy learning more about history in a setting that includes beautiful costumes and staging.
The performance is offered four nights a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday until April 6.
Tickets to the pageant are $15 per person, with children admitted for $7. Advance tickets and reservations are available at Natchez Pilgrimage Tours in the Visitor Reception Center.
