FERRIDAY — Paxton Burge held Trinity Episcopal to just one hit and struck out six batters in five innings as the Columbia Academy Cougars used a five-run surge in the top of the sixth inning to take a 9-1 win Tuesday afternoon at the Huntington Baseball Field in the Saints’ MAIS District 5-AA opener.

Columbia Academy got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the second inning and then added two runs in the top of the fifth for a 3-0 lead. The Cougars then took advantage of Trinity’s miscues in the field to plate five runs to go ahead 8-0.

Starting pitcher Quinton Logan took the loss as he allowed eight runs, only two of them earned, on one hit with five strikeouts, five walks and two hit batters in six innings. Sky Logan, who provided the Saints’ only scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, came on in relief for the seventh inning and allowed one run on three hits. The Saints ended up committing four errors in the game.

Wiley Cleland led Columbia Academy at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double. Jesse Cable had a double for the Saints.

Trinity Episcopal (1-7, 0-1) has a 6 p.m. game Friday at Columbia Academy.

Centreville Academy 11, Bowling Green 1

CENTREVILLE — Colby Shaw allowed no earned runs on one hit and three walks to go with 10 strikeouts and Corey Gaulden went 2-for-4 with a double as the Centreville Academy Tigers had to rally from an early deficit to defeat the Bowling Green School Buccaneers in six innings Tuesday afternoon in their MAIS District 6-AA opener.

Bowling Green scored what turned out to be its only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Meanwhile, Centreville struggled against Thomas LeBlanc in the first four innings and didn’t score its first run until the bottom of the fifth.

The game was still in doubt heading into the bottom of the sixth inning until the Tigers not only took over, but ended the game after scoring 10 runs to run-rule the Buccaneers. Centreville finished with 12 hits in the game. Cale McKey, Mark Curry and Collin Trotti each went 2-for-3.

Centreville Academy (8-0, 1-0) next plays at 4:30 p.m. at Bowling Green for a varsity doubleheader.

Cathedral 12, West Lincoln 2

BROOKHAVEN — Austin Chauvin overcame eight walks by holding West Lincoln to two runs on two hits and he struck out seven batters in five and one-third innings as the Cathedral Green Wave defeated the West Lincoln Bears in six innings Tuesday night in the MHSAA Region 7-1A opener.

Chauvin pitched five consecutive scoreless innings and got plenty of run support along the way. Cathedral jumped on West Lincoln starting and losing pitcher Brady Wilson right out of the gate with five runs in the top of the first inning.

However, Wilson settled down and didn’t allow a run over the next two innings. But the Green Wave’s bats got hot again over the next three innings to take a 12-0 lead. The Bears scored two runs off Chauvin in the bottom of the sixth before Sam Parker came in to relieve him. Parker gave up one hit in two-thirds of an inning to put a close to the game by way of the 10-run mercy rule.

Thomas Garrity went 3-for-3, Jardarius Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double and Ty Brown had a double to lead the Green Wave’s 11-hit assault.

Cathedral (7-3, 1-0) has a JV game at 5 p.m. and a varsity game at 7 p.m. Friday at home against West Lincoln.

St. Mary’s 10, Block 0

NATCHITOCHES, La. — Block High pitcher Taylor Perron limited St. Mary’s to just three hits, but he walked eight batters, hit two batters and didn’t get any help from his defense in a five-inning loss to the Tigers Tuesday afternoon in LHSAA District 4-1A action.

Of the 10 runs St. Mary’s scored, only one of them was earned. That’s because the Tigers were aided not only by Perron having trouble with the strike zone, but by eight Block errors. The Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, three in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fifth that ended the game early.

Cole Nugent was the winning pitcher as he gave up just two hits in five innings.

Block (6-6, 0-1) plays at 4 p.m. Thursday at Northwood-Lena.

Brookhaven Academy 7, ACCS 1

BROOKHAVEN — Landon Nettles went 3-for-4 with a triple and Gage Posey was 2-for-4 as the Brookhaven Academy Cougars defeated the Adams County Christian School Rebels Tuesday afternoon in the MAIS District 5-AA opener for ACCS.

Winning pitcher Tanner Parvin went the distance for Brookhaven Academy, allowing just one run on three hits and the defense behind him didn’t commit a single error. Wade Simpson was charged with the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits and six walks and he struck out three in three and two-thirds innings.

The Cougars broke a scoreless ball game with three runs in the bottom of the third inning. After the Rebels scored once in the top of the fourth inning, the Cougars answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the sixth.

ACCS (5-5, 0-1) has a junior varsity game at 4:30 p.m. and a varsity game at 6:30 p.m. Friday at home against Brookhaven Academy.
