VIDALIA — Vidalia fire crews responded to a fire that spread from a house trailer to two neighboring trailers before it could be contained Wednesday night.

The Concordia Fire District No. 2, Vidalia Fire Department and Monterey Fire District responded to the fire on Morris Road in the Country Estates mobile home park at approximately 7:45 p.m.

Vidalia Fire Chief Johnny Evans said the cause of the fire had not been determined Wednesday evening.

“(The trailers) were close to each other one caught on fire, and the next one that was 10 feet over, it caught on fire,” he said.

“Those two trailers were destroyed, and (the fire) caught the tail end of (a third) trailer, but they were able to catch it and that was saved with only some smoke damage.”

Naymond Purdion was watching television at a friend’s house when they heard strange popping noises coming from the outside, he said.

Running out, they saw the trailer two doors down burning, and Purdion said he grabbed a garden hose and tried to spray down the structure next to the fire to keep the blaze from spreading beyond the original structure.

“There wasn’t enough water pressure in that garden hose to stop it from spreading to the trailer next to it, but I tried,” he said.

The residents of the trailer Purdion tried to save were not home at the time of the fire, he said.

On the other side of the blaze, Deandre Hawkins said a friend called him to tell him his neighbor’s house was on fire, and — rushing from Ferriday — he beat the fire department to the scene.

“I actually had to go and tell them to spray here because the flames were almost to my butane tank,” he said.

“I’m a young man, and this is all I have got, and I can’t just lose it, and it really brings a tear to my eye to see these people lose their home.”
