NATCHEZ — Some might call them the comeback crew, but Adams County Christian School head coach calls them the heart attack kids.

After ACCS came from behind and beat Cathedral High School 10-9 in eight inings, however, it’s hard for McKeivier to complain about the results.

Tuesday night’s comeback was the Rebels’ third in as many games: ACCS topped Cathedral 6-4 last week after trailing 3-0 going into the final inning, and the Rebels stormed back to beat Porter’s Chapel Saturday 17-7 despite facing an early 6-0 deficit.

“To know they don’t give up and fight to the end, it’s kind of rewarding to a point,” McKeivier said. “I know they’re going to believe they’re in every ball game.”

In the bottom of the seventh, ACCS tied it 9-9 when Zac Young scored on a hit by Cody Rhinehart. After keeping Cathedral scoreless in the top of the eighth, the Rebels went to work to plate the winning run.

Brandon Ross started the inning with a double, and the Green Wave intentionally walked Wade Simpson. The Rebels attempted to bunt in the next at-bat, but Cathedral reliever Sam Parker committed a throwing error, sending the ball into right field and allowing Ross to score.

“We have to be able to make the plays to close games out,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said following the loss. “We’ve had trouble doing that this year.”

Parker was charged with the loss, giving up two runs, zero of which were earned. He struck out six, walked two and hit one.

ACCS reliever Tyler Wilson got the win, holding Cathedral scoreless in 4 1/3 innings pitched.

Cathedral scored its first two in the top of the first. Ty Brown came home on a passed ball, and Kyle Bradley scored on a fielder’s choice.

ACCS answered in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run by Simpson to tie it 2-2. The Rebels took the lead 4-2 in the bottom of the second when Jordan Moore came home on a single by Dylan Galbreath. Taylor Buckles scored on the same play when Galbreath tried to make it to second, but was thrown out.

The Green Wave cut ACCS’s lead to 4-3 in the top of the third when Brown scored on a bases loaded walk by Jardarius Anderson. Ross, who started for ACCS, got out of the jam by inducing a double play.

Ross’ luck would change in the top of the fourth, however. After hitting three batters and loading the bases several times, Cathedral stormed back to take a 9-4 lead. Austin Chauvin’s single scored Andrew Beesley and Thomas Garrity with the bases loaded, and Bradley scored on a wild pitch. A single by Jardarius Anderson sent home Sam Fury and Hayden Nunnery, and Anderson later scored on a strikeout by Zach Flattmann that Moore at catcher lost in the dirt.

Ross was unable to finish the fourth, going just 3 2/3 innings for the Rebels.

ACCS began its comeback in the bottom half of the frame, scoring four runs to make it 9-8 Cathedral. Shane Pollan scored on a bases-loaded walk by Jace Calcote, and Young scored on an error. Jordan Moore came home on a wild pitch, and Calcote scored on a sacrifice fly by Ross, who moved to catcher after he was pulled.

Chauvin, who got the start for Cathedral, was lifted in the fourth without recording an out. He went three innings giving up eight runs, six earned, on five hits and three walks. He also had two strikeouts and hit two batters.

Even with all of the comeback wins, McKeivier said his players have to learn how to stop giving up the big inning to the opposition.

“With the young ball club we have, we have to learn to avoid the quicksand and not let things snowball,” McKeivier said. “Whenever we see the momentum shifting, we have to get back to the fundamentals and make a play.”

Craig, meanwhile, said his team will have to learn to move on from a game like Tuesday night’s.

“It’s frustrating, because in all three of our losses, we’ve had the lead in all three games,” he said. “We’re just having trouble closing things out and making routine plays defensively. We’ll keep working and hopefully get better. District play starts next week, and that’s still the focus of the season. Hopefully we’ll have everything together.”

Brown and Chauvin both went 2-for-4 for Cathedral. Ross and Simpson both doubled for ACCS.

Cathedral (4-3) will host Monterey High School Friday, while ACCS (4-3) hosts Franklin County High School today.
