VIDALIA — Cole Cangemi pitched a no-hitter and struck out eight batters as the Vidalia Vikings rolled to a 20-0 win over the Sicily Island Tigers in three innings Tuesday afternoon.
Cangemi walked just one batter, and the defense behind him committed just one error. And he got more than enough run support — Vidalia scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and 12 in the bottom of the second.
Despite the lopsided score, the Vikings had just seven hits. However, they were aided by three Sicily Island errors and a lot of walks by the Tigers’ pitchers. Nate Thomas and Stewart Mallory each had a double for the Vikings.
Vidalia (5-4) next plays at 6 p.m. Friday against Block at the Vidalia Tournament.
Monterey 12, Georgetown 5
MONTEREY — Hayden Cassels belted two doubles in a 4-for-5 performance at the plate, and Dillon Smith went 3-for-5 as the Monterey Wolves defeated the Georgetown Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon.
Hunter Frey pitched effectively in his four innings of work to pick up the win. Frey allowed four runs on five hits, walked four and struck out four batters. The only batters for Georgetown who gave Monterey pitching any difficulties were Ricky Belcher and Jace Sauce. Belcher went 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, while Sauce was 3-for-3 with a double.
After Belcher’s homer tied the game at 3-all in the top of the third, Monterey responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good at 6-3. Each team scored one run in the fifth and the Wolves put the game away with a five-run rally in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-4 advantage. Jefferey Spann went 2-for-2 with a double and Kade Passman was 2-for-4 with a double as part of the Wolves’ 18-hit attack.
Monterey (7-3) has a junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and a varsity game at 7 p.m. Friday at Cathedral.
