Vidalia Girls Softball League goes to full draft

VIDALIA — A notable change has taken place this year for the Vidalia Girl’s Softball League, and director Greg Young said he’s trying to get the word out.
For the last several years, coaches have had the option of bringing girls back that they coached from the previous season. Now, Young said all teams will have to draft every one of their players.
“You pick all new girls every year,” Young said. “We felt like it was better and more fair to everyone if they were drafted. We make sure every team has a pitcher and catcher from every team ages 9 and up. The rest of the team is picked (via draft).”
Young said the reason for going back to a full draft had to do with a level playing field.
“It makes it more even,” Young said. “You won’t have a lopsided team that just beats up on everyone. The program is for the girls, and it’s our job to give them what’s best for them. This makes it even for every girl, not just a select few.”
Registration for all age groups is ongoing until the day of their respective drafts:
- Tee ball players will be drafted March 1
- Seven- and 8-year-olds March 19
- Nine- and 10-year-olds March 21
- Eleven- and 12-year-olds March 22
- Girls ages 13 and older March 25
A ribbon cutting commencing the use of the new Concordia Recreation District 3 complex will be at 5 p.m. April 5. The first day of the season is April 8.
