ALEXANDRIA, La. — After a rough first two innings, Monterey’s Paige Bryan pitched six consecutive scoreless innings as the Lady Wolves held on for a 4-3 win over the Simpson Lady Broncos Friday night at the Alexandria Senior High (ASH) Tournament.

With the game tied at 3-3 after seven innings of play, the international tiebreaker went into effect and Monterey put Bailey New on second base to start the top of the eighth inning. Karlee Woodruff singled her in to give the Lady Wolves a 4-3 lead and Bryan preserved the win by blanking Simpson in the bottom of the eighth.

After Monterey jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Simpson answered with one run in the bottom of the first and two more runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at 3-all.

The remainder of the game was a pitchers’ duel between Bryan and Simpson’s McKenzie Kelly, who came in during the first inning and wound up going seven-plus innings. Bryan pitched all eight innings as she struck out four batters and walked none to pick up the win.

The final score was even though the two teams combined for 16 hits — seven by Monterey, nine by Simpson — and nine errors. Monterey committed four of those errors while Simpson had five errors. New went 3-for-4 with two doubles, as did Ashley Wilson to lead the Lady Wolves at the plate.

Monterey (4-2) plays two games today at the ASH Tournament, first against LaSalle at 1 p.m., followed by a match-up with Rosepine at 3 p.m.

McComb 8, Franklin County 0

MCCOMB — Kamry Creel held Franklin County to just five hits and Leyton Terrell went 3-for-4 with a double as the McComb Lady Tigers rolled past the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs Friday night.

McComb broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Lady Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ariel Johnson went 3-for-3, Destini Brown was 2-for-3 with a double, and Paige Brock had a triple.

Franklin County (0-2) hosts its own tournament today. The Lady Bulldogs will be involved in three of those games. They take on Wesson at 9 a.m., Cathedral at 5 p.m. and Vicksburg at 6:30 p.m.
