Ferriday improves postseason outlook with win

STERLINGTON, La. — It wasn’t the offensive outburst coach Freddie Harrison wanted to see, but Ferriday got the win it was after.
Harrison knew a win over a struggling Sterlington team in a key District 2-2A game on the road Friday night would improve the Trojans’ playoffs chances.
The Trojans defeated the Panthers 14-0.
“It gives us some momentum going into week 10. We’ve got a chance to win the district championship,” Harrison said. “Farmerville’s a real tough opponent. Now we have a second chance to win the district championship.”
He also said that he was proud that his defense held was able to shut out such a high-powered offense.
“Our defense came to play. Their quarterback threw for only about 150 yards,” Harrison said. “I take my hat off to Sterlington. Sterlington fought until the end. They were playing for their playoff lives. They didn’t give up.”
Sterlington quarterback Logan Dopson didn’t even come close to 150 yards passing. He completed 9 of 27 passes for just 59 yards with three interceptions. The Panthers fell to 3-6 overall and 0-4 in district play
But in order for Ferriday to have any chance of upsetting Farmerville, even with it being a home game for the Trojans, Harrison said the offense has to play better than it has in recent weeks.
“I’m challenging the offense right now. The offense has to come to play. It starts with the offensive line,” he said.
Ferriday (7-2, 3-1) was led by Bobby Madison, who had 34 carries for 110 yards and one touchdown, and Rodney Lawson, who completed 7 of 15 passes for 95 yards with one interception.
Block 18, LaSalle 0
OLLA, La. — The Block Bears clinched at least a share of the District 3-1A championship with a shutout win over the LaSalle Tigers Friday night.
“It was sloppy. Our defense was stingy. I didn’t think they would score on us,” Block head coach Benny Vault Jr. said. “I ran four plays. LaSalle is big up front. They challenged us.”
Block (4-5, 4-0) can win the district title outright with a win at home over Tensas High next Friday night. LaSalle fell to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in district play.
Tylertown 36, Wilkinson County 0
TYLERTOWN — Wilkinson County needed to play its best game of the season to have any chance of upsetting top-ranked Tylertown and keeping its slim playoff chances alive.
Instead, the Chiefs showed why they are the best team in Class 3A with a big win.
Marksville 30, Vidalia 14
MARKSVILLE, La. — Vidalia needed a win to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. Instead, the Vikings lost to the Marksville Tigers Friday night to fall to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in district play. Marksville improved to 4-5 overall and 4-1 in district play. Vidalia will end its season next Friday at Jena in a district game.
