BROOKHAVEN — The MAIS District 5-AA championship was on the line Friday night as the Trinity Episcopal Saints looked to go undefeated in district play while the Brookhaven Academy Cougars had to win by at least five points to win the district title.

The game was close for three quarters, but Brookhaven Academy pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Trinity Episcopal 51-39 for the district championship and the No. 1 seed out of District 5-AA for next week’s Class AA South State Tournament.

The Cougars led the Saints 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and maintained their four-point lead at the end of the second and third quarters. But it was the fourth quarter that doomed Trinity as it was outscored by Brookhaven Academy 16-8.

Dre McCoy led the Saints with a game-high 18 points and Tanner Cage scored nine points. The Cougars were led by Matthew Evans with 14 points while Peyton Hood and Will Hickman had 13 points apiece.

Trinity Episcopal (19-6, 5-1) will be the district’s No. 2 seed and will play Monday in the first round of the South State Tournament.

Ferriday 62, Jonesboro-Hodge 42

FERRIDAY — Ferriday’s Quavion Ellis led all scorers with 23 points as the Trojans used a big second quarter to pull away from Jonesboro-Hodge en route to a 20-point win over the Tigers Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

Ferriday was only up by two points over Jonesboro-Hodge, 12-10, at the end of the first quarter. Then the Trojans controlled the action on both ends of the court in the second quarter and ended up outscoring the Tigers 17-6 for a 29-16 halftime lead.

The Trojans continued to add to their lead in the third quarter even though they were held to 10 points. That’s because their defense limited the Tigers to six points for the second straight quarter.

Trey Hall added 16 points and DaJohn Mitchell chipped in with 13 points for the Trojans.

Ferriday (8-14, 4-5) plays host to Homer in a make-up game in its district finale Monday night.

Bogue Chitto 56, Cathedral 50

BOGUE CHITTO — Cathedral appeared ready to get a big win in MHSAA Region 7-1A after outscoring Bogue Chitto 24-9 in the third quarter for a 39-32 lead. Then came the fourth quarter as the Bobcats outscored the Green Wave 24-11 to escape with a six-point win Friday night.

Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said what happened in the second half was pretty much how the regular season went for the Green Wave – playing well in spurts, but not consistent enough.

However, this game should not have gone to the fourth quarter to determine the outcome after Bogue Chitto jumped out to a 17-10 lead after one quarter of play and 23-15 at halftime.

The Green Wave had four players score in double figures, led by R.J. Givens with 14 points. James Coley had 12 points while Jardarius Anderson and Alex Weadock scored 10 points each.

Cathedral (7-18, 1-9) will be the No. 6 seed at the Region 7-1A Tournament at Hinds Agricultural High School and will take on No. 3 seed St. Aloysius Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
