BRANDON — Natchez High nearly rallied from an eight-point deficit after one quarter of play only to run out of steam in the fourth quarter as the visiting Lady Bulldogs lost to the host Brandon Lady Bulldogs 52-45 Friday night in an MHSAA Division 6-6A game.

Although a win would not have advanced Natchez High in the standings in Division 6-6A, it would have given the Lady Bulldogs some much-needed momentum heading into the division tournament that Natchez High will host later this month.

Brandon jumped out to a 21-13 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Natchez High outscored Brandon a combined 24-18 over the next two quarters to make it a 39-37 ball game. However, that would be as close as Natchez High would get as the visiting Lady Bulldogs were outscored by the home-standing Lady Bulldogs 13-8 in the fourth quarer.

Keyana Miller led Natchez High with 14 points and Rashonae Rice chipped in with 12 points. The Lady Bulldogs (15-6, 2-4) host Warren Central Friday night.

Cathedral 20, West Lincoln 19

BROOKHAVEN — Caroline Smith was fouled just as time had expired and made the game-winning free throw as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the West Lincoln Lady Bears in MHSAA Region 7-1A action Friday night.

Sarah Beth Willard led Cathedral with seven points and Kennedy Gray finished with five points. With the win, the Lady Green Wave improved to 9-14 overall and 4-4 in Region 7-1A. A win at Piney Woods next Tuesday night will put them in third place in the region standings.

In what was a stunning end to Cathedral’s first win over West Lincoln in several years, the Lady Bears were called for a foul. The clock had gone down to all zeroes, but as Lady Green Wave head coach Randy Smith described, the buzzer had not sounded.

Caroline Smith went to the free-throw line for a 1-and-1 situation. She made the first free throw and missed the second. And with no time left, the game was over.

ACCS 48, Brookhaven Academy 41

BROOKHAVEN — Tory Laird finished with a game-high 16 points and Skylar Adams had one of her best games of the season as she had 12 points to lead the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels past the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars in MAIS District 5-AA action Friday night.

After a back-and-forth first quarter that ended with ACCS holding on to a 13-11 lead, the Lady Rebels’ defense came up big in the second and third quarters. They held Brookhaven Academy to just three points in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 19-14 lead.

Then the Lady Rebels outscored the Lady Cougars 15-10 in the third quarter for a 34-24 advantage. Brookhaven Academy tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but fell short.

ACCS plays at Parklane Academy Monday night.

Buckeye 53, Vidalia 25

BUCKEYE, La. — The Vidalia Lady Vikings couldn’t get out of the blocks in their LHSAA District 3-3A game against Buckeye and the Lady Panthers took advantage en route to a 28-point win Friday night.

Vidalia scored just two points in the first quarter and was down 12-2 at the end of the quarter. And once halftime arrived, Buckeye had a commanding 28-11 lead over the Lady Vikings.

Shermel Bell and Tierra Bell scored seven points each to lead Vidalia while Fran Duson added six points. The Lady Vikings (0-8 in district) play Tuesday night at Marksville.

Homer 54, Ferriday 35

HOMER, La. — Sha’Keria Kelly led Ferriday with a game-high 27 points, but it was not enough as the Lady Trojans lost to the Homer Lady Pelicans Friday night in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.

In the first half, Homer had its way with Ferriday on both ends of the court. By the time the first quarter was over, the Lady Pelicans had an 11-4 lead. And it only got worse for a young Lady Trojans team in the second quarter as they were outscored 14-6 to go into halftime trailing the Lady Pelicans 25-10.

Ferriday (5-17, 2-5) will play its first home game in three weeks Tuesday night when it hosts Lakeside.
