NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School overcame cold temperatures, puddles and a Green Wave in its 4-2 win against Cathedral High School Wednesday evening.
The Rebels’ Lester Wells led the charge with two goals, and ACCS fought off a late comeback attempt by Cathedral to improve to 12-1-3 on the season.
Austin Walker and Kyle Williams also scored goals for ACCS, but it was the Rebels’ defense that head coach Jimmy Allgood said was the difference in the game.
“(There was) very aggressive play by the whole bunch,” Allgood said. “I’ve got to give kudos to my back line on defense, they shut their guys down in a great manner.”
Allgood also said keeper Zach Pintard played an excellent game limiting Cathedral to only two goals despite the Green Wave taking numerous shots on goal that forced Pintard to get wet and muddy.
“He’s the color of mud in (the locker room),” Allgood said.
Cathedral head coach Dennis Hogue said he was happy to watch his players try to fight through the sloppy, cold conditions, but he still expects to see more our of his team.
“They’ve played better,” Hogue said. “They’ve played smarter. They didn’t do it tonight. They have a better game in them; I don’t know why they didn’t pull it out. Conditions are one reason I guess, but Jimmy’s team looked really good. They were crisp and smart. They passed a lot, and we didn’t pass a lot. We just didn’t play smart ball.”
Cathedral’s Thomas Garrity opened up with a goal in the first several minutes of play, but ACCS’s Austin Walker tied it on a goal off a deflection in the 33rd minute of play.
Ten minutes into the second half, Wells scored his first of two goals on a breakaway. Several minutes later, Wells made it 3-1 ACCS after his second goal.
With only a few minutes left in regulation, Cathedral’s Kyle Bradley scored, cutting the Rebels’ lead to 3-2 and giving the Green Wave a chance for a comeback. But Williams extended ACCS’s lead back to two on a goal less than a minute later.
“We played a lot better in the second half than we did in the first half,” Allgood said. “We had a lot of shots on goal. I’m very proud of these guys.”
After playing Central Private in even rougher weather Tuesday night, Allgood said his players were well-prepared for the challenges Wednesday’s conditions presented. Cathedral, meanwhile, had a tougher time adjusting.
“Our defenders hustle to the ball really quickly, but in this weather, you can’t stop,” Hogue said. “They hustle, go to stop and continue beyond the play, and the guy just lets (the defender) beat themselves. They couldn’t get their footing defensively.”
Hogue added, though, that the Rebels played a better game even with the less-than-ideal conditions.
ACCS will host Laurel Christian at 5 p.m. today, while Cathedral will play at 7 p.m. Friday at Franklin County.
