Prep boys roundups: Brown, Thompson lead Vidalia

JENA, La. — Deion Brown led Vidalia with 16 points and Isiah Thompson had 15 points as the Vikings had no problem disposing of the Jena Giants 63-21 Tuesday night in an LHSAA District 3-3A game.
Vidalia jumped out to a 16-6 lead after one quarter. When halftime arrived, the Vikings had a commanding 37-8 lead and continued to have their way with Jena throughout much of the second half. By the end of the third quarter, Vidalia led 51-14.
Julius Wilson added 11 points for Vidalia. Jaylon Brown led Jena with nine points and Kyle Robertson had five points.
Vidalia (2-1 in district) plays at Avoyelles Friday night.
Block 79, Montgomery 78
JONESVILLE — The Block Bears overcame a sluggish first quarter and a 33-point performance by Montgomery’s Bijon Washington to defeat the Tigers Tuesday night in an LHSAA District 4-1A game.
Block looked like it was going to be for a long game after falling behind 27-9 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Bears answered in a big way by outscoring the Tigers 29-9 in the second quarter for a 38-36 lead.
Montgomery took a 57-56 lead into the fourth quarter, but Block outscored the Tigers 23-21 to come away with the victory. The Bears were led by Ken Colbert with 26 points while Ray Plummer added 16 points and Dorian Bowman had 15 points.
Block (7-12, 2-0) next plays at St. Mary’s Friday night.
Wilkinson County 50, Crystal Springs 45
CRYSTAL SPRINGS — Allenzae Staggers led a balanced scoring attack for Wilkinson County with 15 points as the Wildcats rallied from a 12-points halftime deficit to defeat the Crystal Springs Tigers Tuesday night to remain undefeated in MHSAA Region 7-3A.
Wilkinson County had trouble getting into a rhythm in the first half and trailed Crystal Springs 28-16 at halftime. Then the Wildcats turned to their defense to turn the momentum in their favor. They cut the Tigers’ lead to nine points by the end of the third quarter and then outscored the Tigers 23-9 in the fourth quarter.
Phillip Fountain, Trae McKenzie and Charles Bell had eight points each and Devin Voorhies added seven points for Wilkinson County. Joshua Windom led Crystal Springs with 14 points and Dionysius Hines had eight points.
Wilkinson County (11-8, 3-0) hosts Jefferson County Friday night.
Jefferson County 72, Hazlehurst 66 (OT)
HAZLEHURST — Jamel Anderson scored 24 points and Nicholas Brown had 19 points as the Jefferson County Tigers bounced back from a 19-point deficit to defeat the Hazlehurst Indians in overtime in an MHSAA Region 7-3A game Tuesday night.
Jefferson County couldn’t get anything going in the first quarter and was down 23-4 at the end of the quarter. The Tigers could only manage to knock two points off that big deficit by the end of the third quarter and defeat seemed inevitable. That’s until the Tigers outscored the Indians 27-10 to send the game into overtime tied at 57-57.
Then Jefferson County capped off the unlikely comeback by outscoring Hazlehurst 15-9 in the overtime period. Ry’Ale Brown added 13 points for the Tigers.
Jefferson County (10-9, 2-1) plays at Wilkinson County Friday night.
