Prep girls roundups: Jefferson County sweeps home tourney

FAYETTE — It wasn’t easy, but the Jefferson County Lady Tigers ended up going undefeated at the Jefferson County Tournament after defeating the Jim Hill Lady Tigers 54-47 Friday night.
After relatively easy wins over Hinds Agricultural High School and Columbia High School, Jefferson County was given a tough test by Jim Hill. The visiting Lady Tigers from Jackson trailed by eight points at halftime, only to outscore the host Lady Tigers 15-7 in the third quarter to tie the score at 37-37.
But in the fourth quarter, Jefferson County was not going to be denied as it outscored Jim Hill 17-10. Keionne January led the Lady Tigers with a game-high 17 points and Brandy Buck finished with 10 points. Diamond Gaines and Taneisha Bailey contributed with eight points each.
Jefferson County won first place by going 3-0 in its own tournament and improved to 11-5 overall. The Lady Tigers resume MHSAA Region 7-3A play next Friday night when they host Crystal Springs.
Vidalia 45, Sicily Island 37
VIDALIA — Shermel Bell led Vidalia with 14 points and Fran Duson had 11 points as the Lady Vikings defeated the Sicily Island Lady Tigers Friday night to pick up their third win of the season.
Vidalia’s defense was the story of the first half as the Lady Vikings held Sicily Island to single-digit scoring in each of the first quarters en route to a 15-8 halftime lead. Then it was their offense that got going in the third quarter as they outscored the Lady Tigers 17-11 for a 32-19 advantage.
Aniyah Brown and Kalia Phillips tried to help Sicily Island rally in the fourth quarter, but the visitors fell short. Brown and Phillips had 11 points each to lead the Lady Tigers.
The Lady Vikings improved to 3-10 overall and begin LHSAA District 3-3A play next Tuesday night when they play host to Caldwell Parish.
Monterey 53, Calvin 35
MONTEREY — Reagan Tiffee led all scorers with 16 points and Kaley Baker added 13 points as the Monterey Lady Wolves rolled to an 18-point win over the Calvin Lady Cougars Friday night.
After a first quarter that ended with Monterey holding a 9-3 lead, the Lady Wolves pulled away. The Lady Wolves outscored the Lady Cougars 13-8 in the third. And that was followed by an 18-11 advantage by Monterey in the fourth quarter.
Monterey (15-3) begins LHSAA District 4-B action next Tuesday at Grace Christian.
Oak Forest 37, Centreville Academy 28
CENTREVILLE — Courtney Ourso led a balanced scoring attack for Oak Forest Academy with nine points and the Lady Yellow Jackets held Centreville Academy scoreless in the second quarter en route to a nine-point win over the Lady Tigers in MAIS District 6-AA action Friday night.
Centreville’s Tori Rouse was the only player for either team to score in double figures as she finished with 10 points. Taylor Delatte chipped in with seven points. The Lady Tigers (7-7, 0-3) hit the road to take on Central Private School next Tuesday night.
