BROOKHAVEN — Even though Adams County Christian School had a day between games at the Brookhaven Academy Holiday Invitational, the Lady Rebels did not know who their opponent would be until late Friday night.

That’s because after Wilkinson County Christian Academy was unable to participate in the tournament, Central Private School ended up taking on Brookhaven Academy. Surprisingly, ACCS’s opponent wound up being the host Lady Cougars.

And the Lady Rebels had no answer for Madison Warren, who led all scorers with 24 points in leading Brookhaven Academy to a 42-34 victory.

“We didn’t play well. There are better days ahead. Overall, we didn’t play well as a team,” ACCS head coach Melanie Hall said. “We didn’t execute our press offense. We had a lot of turnovers. We didn’t get the 50-50 balls. We got out-rebounded.”

Brookhaven Academy took an 11-8 lead over ACCS at the end of the first quarter. The next two quarters were also close and the Lady Cougars could only manage to add two points to their lead in the second quarter and still led by just five after three quarters of play at 27-22. Yet the Lady Rebels were not able to put forth a rally in the fourth quarter.

“We just have to keep working together and keep working to get better. I believe in my girls and we’re going to find a way,” Hall said.

ACCS (4-10) were led by Tory Laird with 12 points and Skylar Adams added six points.

Hall said she was glad to see Brookhaven Academy, one of ACCS’s MAIS District 5-AA opponents, before district play gets under way in late January.

“The next time we see Brookhaven Academy, we’re going to be a different ball club,” Hall said. “The district games are vital because we don’t have a district tournament. We got to see some different things from them.”

The Lady Rebels next play on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at Cathedral.

Franklin Parish 49, Ferriday 32

SICILY ISLAND, La. — After playing solid basketball in the first half, the Ferriday Lady Trojans did just the opposite in the second half and Franklin Parish took advantage as the Lady Patriots rallied for a 17-point win Saturday afternoon at the Sicily Island Tournament.

Ferriday got off to a good start and led Franklin Parish 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. Despite being outscored by the Lady Patriots 13-11 in the second quarter, the Lady Trojans took a 25-24 lead into halftime. It was what happened after intermission that puzzled head coach Lisa Abron.

“We played wonderful in the first. I thought we were on a run. Second half — cold, cold shooting,” Abron said. “In the first half we did an excellent job in breaking their press, taking our time and selecting what shots to take. The second half, I guess we forgot what to do.”

Led by Myesha Ellis, Jamecia Robinson and Jarhonda Wilhite, Franklin Parish dominated Ferriday on both ends of the court in the second half. The Lady Patriots outscored the Lady Patriots 14-2 in the third quarter and 11-5 in the fourth quarter. Ellis led all scorers with 13 points, Robinson had 12 points and Wilhite added 10 points.

Abron said the second-half meltdown by her team was due to a combination of playing three games in three days, the holidays and Saturday’s game being an earlier game than her team is accustomed to.

“Once again, we dug ourselves in a big hole and didn’t know what to do. I was disappointed in how we played in the second half. We just gave the game to them. We’ve got to get back to work pretty quickly.”

Only four players managed to end up in the scoring column for Ferriday. Jada Griggs led the Lady Trojans with 11 points and ShaKeria Kelly finished with 10 points.

Next up for Ferriday (2-12) is a home game against Sterlington in its LHSAA District 2-2A opener on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
