TALLULAH, La. — Lake Providence had no answer for Vidalia High School’s Julius Wilson.

And thanks to Wilson’s 36 points, the Vikings are no longer winless on the season.

Wilson and Vidalia were able to overcome a first-quarter deficit and run away with a 70-52 win against Lake Providence in the Madison High School tournament Saturday. Vikings head coach Robert Sanders said all aspects of Wilson’s game were working for him,

“He hit a few outside shots, but he was mainly driving to the hole and getting fouled and knocking his free throws down,” Sanders said. “He was completing the old-fashioned three-point play.”

Vidalia trailed 17-11 after the first quarter but went off in the second, scoring 22 points and limiting Lake Providence to just six. The Vikings led 33-23 at intermission.

“We fought back to take the lead and maintained it for the rest of the game, unlike Thursday night,” Sanders said, referring to his team’s overtime loss to Tensas High School despite having a 20-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Deion Brown finished with 13 points for Vidalia. Kelton Campbell led Lake Providence with 18 points, and A.J. Bruce added 15 points.

Sanders said he was happy his team got its first win, but it doesn’t really take any pressure off them, with Sicily Island looming in the distance.

“They’ll present a stiff challenge,” Sanders said. “We’re still not 100 percent. We have several different players out with the flu, so hopefully it will run its course before the holidays are over. We’ll have to bring all of our horses.”

Vidalia (1-11) will play Sicily Island Dec. 27 in the Sicily Island tournament.

Cathedral boys 41, Enterprise 25

ENTERPRISE — Despite winning the championship game of the Enterprise Tournament, Cathedral boys head coach Peter Arnold was none too pleased.

“We missed enough layups and free throws to last a whole season,” Arnold said.

“It was horrifying. We’re just in a rut in scoring the ball. We’re getting close shots and not making them, and we’re stepping up to the free throw line and missing free throws. Sometimes it gets so obvious that they just press too hard.”

Cathedral led 22-17 at the half and 28-25 at the end of three before Arnold decided to go to man-to-man defense.

“We had some early foul trouble and held off on man-to-man until the fourth,” Arnold explained. “When we did, we shut them down.”

Literally — Enterprise failed to score a point in the fourth quarter. Arnold said he was pleased with the defense, but needs to see more offense from his boys.

“Forty-one points is not going to win many ball games,” Arnold said. “I don’t care how good you play on defense.”

Jardarius Anderson and Jarrell Johnson both scored 12 points for Cathedral. Enterprise’s Ethan Newman totaled 10 points.

Cathedral rose to 6-7 on the season.

Sacred Heart 27

ENTERPRISE — Taylor Beesley led Cathedral with 12 points as the Lady Green Wave topped Sacred Heart in the Enterprise Tournament Saturday.

Kennedy Gray, Sallie Stout and Sarah Beth Willard all scored eight points for Cathedral, which led 24-14 at the half.

“It was a team effort; we were very balanced,” Lady Green Wave head coach Randy Smith said. “We play in these tournament games so we can learn our plays and work together better, and everyone played really well.”

Cathedral (4-7) will play next on Dec. 27 at Monterey.
