NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School soccer team tested the nerves of its head coach Wednesday night but also managed to make him extremely proud.

“They had me nervous there at halftime,” Jim Allgood said about his team’s 2-0 halftime deficit. “But I’m super proud of this whole bunch.”

The Rebels stormed back behind a stand-out performance from Lester Wells to tie the game with Oak Forest at two, and eventually win it 3-2 in a penalty kick shootout.

“This is a major win for us,” Allgood said. “We finished behind Oak Forest last year and this is a good team.”

Oak Forest’s Brady Joiner and Jacob Leto each netted a goal in the first half to put the Rebels on the ropes. ACCS outshot the Yellow Jackets in the first half but was unable to get a ball past Oak Forest goalkeeper Trevor Besse.

But the Rebels turned up the offensive pressure in the second half and finally broke through with a goal by Wells.

The tying goal came late in the second half when Wells weaved his way through a swarm of Yellow Jackets and found Austin Walker in the middle of the penalty box. Walker neatly tucked the ball past Besse to tie the game.

The two teams traded chances for the remainder of regulation and the overtime period.

ACCS goalkeeper Zach Pintard stepped up with a couple of game-saving saves at the end of regulation, and then held Oak Forest to just two goals during the shootout to preserve the victory.

Wells, Justin Allgood and Dylan Galbreath each found the back of the net for the Rebels in the shootout, with Wells netting the third and game-winning penalty kick goal.

“We really picked it up offensively in the second half with our passing attack and working together,” Allgood said.

The Rebels improved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-0 in district play. They will host a tournament Saturday and will likely face Oak Forest again in the opening match, Allgood said.
