JONESVILLE — One more win, and Block High School head coach Benny Vault Jr. reaches a new plateau.

Vault has never led the Bears to a 10-win season since taking over in 2007. At 9-2 on the season, Block needs to win its game Friday against Westminster Christian Academy out of Opelousas, La., to get win No. 10.

Oh yeah, and it also means Block would advance to the quarterfinals of the LHSAA Class 1A playoffs.

“Last week, the kids came up with a new goal,” Vault said. “We always want to win a state championship, but I haven’t had a 10-win season, so it’s another point of motivation for them.”

Another goal for Block will be getting past the quarterfinals, as the Bears have yet to go beyond the third round of the postseason under Vault. But Vault insisted that his team isn’t looking ahead.

“I got my bracket up on the board,” Vault said. “Last week, it only had us and Delhi Charter, and this week, it only has us and Westminster.”

Like Block, WCA is 9-2 on the season, and Vault said the Crusaders will normally line up with the quarterback in the shotgun on offense.

“They look pretty big up front, and they seem to have some speed,” Vault said. “It will be a tough game for us. They run a spread and send their receivers out wide.

“They execute really well. I feel like we might have more team speed, but I have a hard time telling on film.”

Vault also said the team speed element is big for his players when it comes to playing defense, since it allows the Bears to play man-to-man coverage and stack the line to stop the run. On offense, it allows them to attack the outside.

“We beat a lot of people with our speed,” Vault said. “You don’t have to have great blocks. Our running backs have really come on in the last few weeks, and we have four guys running well.”

Those four are Mario Bowman, Ray Plummer, Ken Colbert and William Cummings. Each player brings a unique look in the running game for the Bears, Vault said.

“Ray has a power game, and Mario is a slasher,” Vault said. “If you get him inside, he’s a really shifty runner. Ken runs with speed but also a lot of power, and Cummings is 225 pounds, so I told him not to run around anyone, but to make his own holes. He’s also done a great job blocking.”

In addition, tight end Ty Bell has also gotten some carries for the Bears.

“He’s a 4.4 40 guy with extra speed, so if we can get a block to the outside, it’s kind of hard to cut him off,” Vault said.
