BATON ROUGE — Services for Jim Farrier, 74, of Baton Rouge, were Dec. 26, 2009, under the direction of Rabenhorst Funeral Home in Baton Rouge.

The service was attended by family and friends, all who hold precious memories of his life and times.

Most notably, Jim will be remembered for his swift, irreverent and clever witticisms and endless storehouse of amazing information.

After graduation from Baton Rouge High School in 1953, Jim received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Louisiana State University, where he also received his law degree in 1959. Initially a maritime attorney with Phelps, Dunbar in New Orleans, Jim was admitted to the bar in Texas and practiced in Houston before becoming a maritime lawyer and moving to Lake Charles. Eventually he returned to Baton Rouge and opened a general practice. Of note, an article of his is published in the “Louisiana Law Review.”

Jim loved the opera, classical music, classic literature, fine dining and a good drink of Scotch at the Starmist until it closed and later at The Patio. He enjoyed experimenting in the kitchen. His turkey gumbo became legendary.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Bennett and Estelle Farrier, his only daughter, Celeste, his only son, Jamie, his sister-in-law Joe Karen Garraway Bray and a beloved Himalayan cat, Tuna Ann.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Jemmy Sue Garraway Farrier; one brother, Bennett Farrier, Jr.; three step-children, Tracy Militello and husband, Randy, of Baton Rouge, Ben Byron Montgomery of Tylertown, Chandler Montgomery Smith and husband, Joe, of Memphis, Tenn.; one sister-in-law Jack Garraway Kelly of Natchez and three step-grandchildren, Sean and Luke Militello and Charles Chandler Montgomery.

Rest in peace, Jim Farrier. We leave you with words you were heard to say yourself: “Even the best of friends cannot attend each other’s funeral.” Thanks for the memories.
