WOODVILLE — Jaylen Washington had two touchdown receptions and a touchdown on special teams as the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams had no problem defeating the Prentiss Christian School Saints Friday night in the opening round of the MAIS Class A South State Playoffs.
“It was a good win tonight. Our defense set the tone in the first drive. The harder you play, you’ve got good things happening to you,” WCCA head coach David Wright said. “The kids came out and executed the game plan, almost to perfection.”
Washington’s first touchdown came in an odd way. Prentiss Christian’s punter punted the ball, but the ball bounced off one of his teammates and on to the ground. Washington picked up the fumble and returned it 26 yards with 10:29 to go in the first quarter.
He added a 16-yard TD catch from Taylor Prevost and Quincy Thompson’s 33-yard touchdown run gave District 3-A champion WCCA an 18-0 lead.
Prevost connected with Washington on a 10-yard touchdown pass nearly midway through the second quarter and Reed Sturgeon’s extra point put the Rams ahead 25-0. They would take a 38-0 lead into halftime.
Austin Goodfellow was WCCA’s leading rusher with 77 yards and a touchdown on just four carries while Kaleb Sterling had 71 yards and a touchdown on five carries. L.J. Jackson had a solid all-around game — a 46-yard touchdown run, three tackles, two sacks and two interceptions.
WCCA (10-1) plays host to Heidelberg Academy in a South State semifinal game next Friday at 7 p.m.
