Sister Clare Hogan

MOBILE, Ala. — Mass of Resurrection for Sister Clare Elizabeth Hogan, 83, Daughter of Charity, who died Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at her home, will be 11 a.m. today Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Mobile.

Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at the church.

Sister Clare was born Sept. 27, 1926, in New Orleans, the daughter of Benjamin Ambrose Hogan and Mary Tonguis Hogan. She entered the Daughters of Charity in 1943. As a Daughter of Charity of 66 years, she first ministered as a teacher in Keokuk, Iowa. After graduating from Catholic University, Washington D.C., she served as a social worker in South San Gabriel, Calif., Covington, Ky., Jackson and Evansville, Ind. She opened and directed the office of Catholic Charities in Natchez for a number of years. In Mobile, she served as administrator of St. Mary’s Home, and most recently, as a counselor at 2-B Choices for Women of Catholic Social Services.

Sister Clare has touched thousands of lives through a variety of programs including Prevention and Awareness of Child Abuse programs, HUGS (Helping Us Grow Stronger), a program to help teen mothers bond and nurture their infants; the Healthy Start Program which targets families with at-risk newborns; Emergency Aid; Christmas Shoe Drive for the needy; the Guardian Shelter for Battered Families; and has shared countless more blessings with the people she touched. A faith-filled woman of great love, warmth and compassion, she will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Mary Rita Hogan Rostetter and husband, Lloyd, John Hogan, Linnette Hogan Crosby and husband, John L. Crosby Sr., and Thomas J. Hogan; one brother-in-law, Alex Freeman; and two sisters-in-law, Rose Monjure Hogan and Laverne Heath Hogan.

Survivors include one sister, Marjorie Hogan Freeman of Metairie, La.; four brothers, Benjamin Hogan Jr. of New Orleans, Ralph Hogan and wife, Patricia G., of Metairie, Lawrence R. Hogan and wife, Valerie Benson, of Kenner and Ned Hogan of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one sister-in-law, Carol Benson Hogan; a number of nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Tay Brown; and a number of friends in Natchez and Mobile.
