Morton throttles Jefferson County in first round of Class 3A playoffs

MORTON — Jefferson County had to play a flawless game in order to pull off an upset of a Morton team ranked No. 5 in Class 3A in the first round of the Class 3A South State Playoffs.

Unfortunately, that did not happen as the Tigers committed four turnovers and their defense could not stop Percy Lewis and Leland McGee, who combined for all five of the Panthers’ touchdowns in a 34-6 win.

Jefferson County quarterback Kiwaski Tenner had a rough night against a good Morton defense. He completed 8 of 13 passes but for just 50 yards and threw two interceptions. The Tigers also lost two fumbles to Morton, the No. 2 seed from Region 6-3A.

Morton (11-1) jumped out to a 14-0 lead less than three and a half minutes into the game thanks to touchdown runs of 33 yards and 1 yard by Lewis.

Tenner scored on a 1-yard run with 5:18 to go in the opening quarter, but that would be the only points that Jefferson County (4-7), the No. 3 seed from Region 7-3A, would get.

Lewis scored on a 3-yard run right before halftime and McGee scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and a 6-yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Jena 27, Vidalia 6

JENA, La. — Vidalia was hoping to salvage a lost season with a win over the Giants that would have put the Vikings at the .500 mark in District 3-3A.

Instead, they ended up losing to a Jena Giants team that hadn’t won a game all season — until Friday night.

Vidalia finished at 3-7 overall and 2-4 in district play while Jena ended up at 1-9 overall and 1-5 in district play.
