Newspaper aims for different ‘perspective’

Prayer goes into each edition of Kevin and Karol Guthrie’s bimonthly Christian newspaper.
&uot;Every story is an answer to prayer,&uot;&160;Karol said. &uot;I feel like the Lord just leads me to the stories I’m supposed to write at that time.&uot;
The Guthries first began publishing their newspaper, The Perspective, in Feb. 1997, and have been producing it consistently ever since.
&uot;Our goal with the paper is really to try to provide positive news about people in this area,&uot; Kevin said.
The Guthries do this in a way that they describe as unashamedly biased to their Christian beliefs.
&uot;I don’t think there is a human being on this earth that is unbiased,&uot; Karol said. &uot;Your perspective is going to come through.&uot;
The Guthries and their 9-month old daughter, Kaylee, live in Vidalia, where Kevin serves as the youth minister at Calvary Baptist Church.
Karol, who has a journalism degree, writes most of the stories for the paper.
&uot;I don’t have to spend a lot of time on the bad news,&uot; Karol Guthrie said. &uot;That’s what I&160;like about it. I get to focus on what people are doing right in their lives.&uot;
She enjoys writing about people who have strong stories of faith. However, she stresses that the focus is not on the person but their relationship with Christ.
&uot;It’s a chance for them to say ‘here is the difference God made in my life,’&uot; Karol said.
Kevin sells and designs advertisements and lays out each edition. He first came up with the idea for the paper from listening to American Family Radio.
&uot;I thought it would be a neat idea for someone to do something like that around here in newspaper form,&uot;&160;he said. &uot;I got to thinking about it and started looking around at other newspapers.&uot;
The paper usually includes eight pages and has also grown from a circulation of 6,000 to 9,000 in the past three years. The papers are free and distributed in bulk to variety of locations.
