WOODVILLE — Their opponent may be undefeated, but Jefferson County High School head coach James Herrington said the approach would be the same.

When the Tigers (3-4, 1-0) travel to Wilkinson County High School tonight, they will go against a Wildcats team that has a lot of people’s attention. But Herrington said it’s just the next game in a tough MHSAA Region 7-3A game.

“It’s what we’ve been saying all year: It’s not the games you’ve played, it’s the games in front of you,” Herrington said.

“They’re 6-0, but they’re the next team. We have to prepare for them the same way we have everyone — we have to tackle well, not turn it over and make sure to capitalize on opportunities to score.”

Wildcats head coach Kenneth Brown said the Tigers’ rough start to the season should be taken with a grain of salt.

“Watching them on film, they look like a pretty good football team,” Brown said. “They like to run the pro set (offense) most of the time, but they do have what looks like an option game if the situation presents itself.”

Herrington said Wildcats quarterback Devin Voorhies and the offensive line all play a part in their production.

“They do a great job of blocking up front and getting to that next level, to the linebackers and safeties,” Herrington said.

With an undefeated record, the Wildcats (1-0 in region) players are aware that teams want to give Wilkinson County its first loss, Brown said.

“We try to instill in them that we’re 6-0, and everybody’s gunning for us,” Brown said. “We can’t afford to make any mistakes. We have to stay focused on the next game, not looking ahead to anyone.”
