A Fayette woman was killed around 10 p.m. Saturday when she was struck by more than one vehicle on Mississippi 553 just inside the city limits of Fayette.
Helen Ann Reed, 46, was walking home along the highway from an Exxon gas station when it is believed she was struck by a vehicle, said Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker.
&uot;She was headed west when a vehicle hit her,&uot; he said.
&uot;We believe she was run over by a second vehicle and possibly a third.&uot;
Despite the sparsely lit highway, a witness driving by the scene reported seeing what she believed to be a woman hurt on the road, Walker said.
The witness turned around to go back to check on the woman when she saw another car run over the body, he said.
The witness called Fayette police, who called in Jefferson County’s sheriff.
The coroner’s office is investigating. Results are still pending on forensic evidence from the body.
Until the investigation is complete, Walker said the death is being ruled accidental.
He did not know whether charges would be filed.
Walker said investigators have a description of at least one of the vehicles, but no arrests have been made.
