For the second time in three months, a Natchez child was wounded Saturday in an accidental shooting. A 9-year-old girl is in good condition at University Medical Center in Jackson after being shot in the chest by her 7-year-old brother with a 9mm handgun, officials said.
The girl was rushed to Natchez Regional Medical Center at 8 a.m. Saturday with a gunshot wound to her chest, said Natchez Police Chief Willie Huff.
She was later transferred to University Medical Center, where she was listed in good condition Saturday night, according to a University Medical Center spokesperson.
The girl’s three brothers found a 9mm handgun under the couch in their home on East Oak Street and were playing with it when it discharged, wounding their sister, said Huff said.
The shooting was an accident and no charges have been filed, he said.
In June, 8-year-old La’Joshua White was shot in the stomach in what police said was an accidental shooting by his 13-year-old brother Frederick.
Days later La’Johsua had to have his leg amputated because of irreparable damage to his leg.
Huff said the accidents prove gun owners need to be careful with their weapons.
