Cutcliffe to broadcast from Natchez

Rebel fanatic Don Smith passed on a fun fact that at the end of David Cutcliffe’s radio show last week, an announcement was made that the Ole Miss coach will do his radio show from Natchez before the LSU game. A call to Ole Miss verified the broadcast will be on Thursday, Oct. 28, but the site was unknown. Something tells me we’ll get the answer to that soon and we’ll pass it on.
n North Louisiana has always been known as quarterback country. And for good reason, when you consider the likes of Bert Jones, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Ferguson, David Woodley and Stan Humphries, to name a few.
But when you look over the past decade, New Orleans can boast of quite a few good ones.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart graduated from John Ehret in the early 1990s.
And, of course, there’s Peyton Manning with Newman. And there was an outstanding quarterback from Shaw named Chuck Parquet who played at North Carolina.
And now you’ve got Eli Manning from Newman starting at Ole Miss.
Look out, north Louisiana, New Orleans is catching up. Then again, as long as Evangel is up in Shreveport, the scales will be tilting northward.
n Did you see where they let cows into the Louisiana Superdome to eat some of the real grass that was brought in? I don’t know, but for some reason when I saw those cows moving on the Superdome turf, it reminded me of Earl Campbell and Ken Stabler when they were Saints.
n Four years after graduating from Alcorn State, Steve McNair’s name still stands at the top of 13 catergories in Division I-AA.
McNair holds the record for total offensive yards in a career (16,823); total plays (2,055); most yards per game (400.5); total offensive yards in a season (527.2); career yards (16,823); plays (2,055); yards average (8.19); season yards (5,799); plays (649) and average (8.94) and single game yards (649 against Southern Oct. 22, 1994).
If you are looking for a wide receiver or linebacker, Mississippi appears to be the place.
According to the Mississippi Gridiron Authority, 10 of the top 25 seniors in the state play either wide receiver or linebacker. Split end Chris Collins of Amite County is rated No. 8 on the list, while linebacker Rob Robertson of Centreville is No. 19.
However, it’s an offensive lineman at the top of the list. Madison Central’s Doug Buckles holds that honor.
Taylorsville quarterbcak Jason Campbell is rated No. 2, while Gautier wide receiver Ray Ray Bivens is No. 3.
I mentioned to Cathedral defensive coach Terry Moffett that I would love them to make the playoffs and play Taylorsville in the first round so I could see this quarterback.
&uot;If we have to play Taylorsville in the first round, I’m not sure it would be worth making it,&uot; Moffett replied with a laugh.
Of course anyone who knows Moffett knows he would be drooling in anticipation of such a challenge.
Cathedral moved up to 2A this year.
Other receivers on the list are Trey Fryfogle of George County, Antonio Hargro of Gautier, Vincent Strickland of Hattiesburg and Deshaun Fields of Amory.
Other linebackers are Jason Clark of Starkville, Skylor Magee of Poplarville and Robert Spivey of Clarksdale.
