P. Z. Brewer flirted with disaster Sunday before playing a good back nine to grab the inaugural Beau Pre Country Club Championship.
Brewer started the day with a two stroke lead thanks to a first round 74 on Saturday.
Brewer’s Sunday wasn’t as smooth as Saturday.
He missed a three footer for par and bogeyed the first hole.
If that wasn’t bad enough, Brewer could only make par once in the next four holes.
After making par on the second hole, Brewer bogeyed on Holes 3, 4 and 5.
Brewer was four over after five holes. &uot;I started our real shaky today,&uot; Brewer said. &uot;I didn’t play as well today. I played a better game Saturday. I barely managed to get it home.&uot;
He managed a 76 to win the tournament by two strokes on a course he hasn’t played much. The former Natchez resident moved to Jackson two years ago.
&uot;I have to make trips down to play on the course and get used to it,&uot; Brewer said.
Brewer has played enough to make a comeback on the back nine. He mixed two more bogeys in with five pars and two birdies to regain the lead.
The 15th hole was the hole that allowed Brewer to stretch the lead. Brewer parred 15 as Howard Jones bogeyed. That chain of events allowed Brewer to jump out to a two-stroke lead.
Brewer was able to hold off Bill Byrne, Lloyd Tressler and Jones to get the win.
He finished on a high note with a birdie at 18.
Brewer is happy to be the first winner of the Beau Pre tournament.
&uot;I’m proud to be the first champion, Brewer said. &uot;I’m getting older now. I figured I didn’t have too many many more in me. I’ve been playing good golf this year. I figured this was my best chance.&uot;
Brewer had nothing but praise for the course.
&uot;Beau Pre is a great course,&uot; he said. &uot;It is hard but the course is in great condition. It is a great test of one’s skills.&uot;
